During this time of year (or for me maybe any time of year), I have a major sweet tooth! The challenge with a sweet tooth is to not over do it with the sugar consumption, both to protect our health and waistlines. Avoiding sweets completely tends to backfire. Most can hold off and avoid for a day, a few hours or a few minutes depending on the urge. Here are a few of my go to sweet treats, that save you on the sugar, but still satisfies that urge.
Dark Chocolate Coconut Greek Yogurt:
A few years back Chobani Yogurt came out with a new line called Flips. These are amazing tasting, dessert like yogurt. My favorite is their Almond Coco Loco. The problem for me, was it worth eating for 230 calories and 22g sugar? So I started playing in the kitchen to create my own Dark Chocolate Coconut Greek Yogurt, and now the Almond Coco Loco taste too sweet to me!
What you will need: 1 plain greek yogurt, 2 Tbsp Almonds (my new favorite is Blue Diamond Coconut Almonds), 1 Tbsp dark chocolate chips, 1 tsp coconut extract (optional if you use the coconut Almonds). Mix those all together and enjoy!
Peanut Butter & Jelly Oatmeal:
This is a old time favorite of mine, that I will use as a night time snack, but is great for breakfast. The peanut butter melts right into the oatmeal which adds a richness and lots of flavor. Adding fresh berries or touch of your favorite jam or preserve gives it that sweetness you are looking for. This is the kind of snack or breakfast that sticks to your ribs.
What you will need: 1/2 cup plain oatmeals, 1/4 cup water/skim milk, 1 Tbsp all natural peanut butter, 1 tsp jam or 1/2 cup berries.
In a bowl mix 1/2 cup plain oatmeal + water/milk. Microwave for 1 minute until fully cooked. Mix in your peanut butter and jam or fruit. Enjoy.
Apple Cinnamon Microwave Bake
I love apple crisp and pie, especially pipping hot. Unfortunately eating apple pie or crisp everyday will not keep the doctor away. I figured a quick way to get an apple day and all the sweet warm taste of home in a few minutes, thus the creation of my Apple Cinnamon Microwave Bake.
What you will need: 1 Apple (I love Macintosh for this, pick your favorite), 1 Tbsp water, cinnamon to taste
Chop up the apple in to small chunks, place in bowl with 1 Tbsp Water. Cover with saran wrap, and steam in microwave for 1 minute until apple is soft. Stir in cinnamon to taste and enjoy!
Snack Attack Pack:
This you have seen many times on my blog, but is always a go to for me. I love the combination of sweet salty! I know keeps these in my bag and desk at work. This is my new favorite snack to bring to the movies.
What you will need: 1/2 cup high fiber cereal (Kashi Go Lean/ Fiber One), 2 Tbsp favorite nuts (peanuts, almonds, cashews), 1-2 Tbsp Dark Chocolate chips, snack size bags. Mix together and enjoy!
