If you asked the average American if they thought breakfast was important, they would say “Yes!” In fact 93% reported it to be the most important meal of that day, yet only 44% of American are actually taking the time to eat breakfast! The “AM Time Crunch” for most of my clients is the #1 reason they run out the door with nothing in their tummies. And if they do manage to eat a breakfast, it typical comes from a coffee shop or drive through, which means large portions and lots of refined carbohydrates. Later that type of meal translates in to sugar cravings and energy crashes. My favorite solution for a breakfast “AM Time Crunch” is smoothies! In one small cup you can get complete breakfast that keeps you full, satisfied and energized for the day.

For me breakfast sets the tone for the day, will I eat well, make smart food choices and have energy or will I grab whatever I can get my hands on and drag through the day. So I created my go to smoothie The Power of Breakfast Smoothie. After many iteration I have found perfection.  I found using frozen fruit is inexpensive and keep the prep time to minimum. The almond milk give the smoothie a nutty and satifiying flavor, while keeping the calories down. Now it is just combining ingredients in the cup, blends and go!  The Power of Breakfast Smoothie keeps me full and focused all the way until lunch time, having only 280 calories, 11 grams fiber and 21g protein! To keep it interesting you can change up the fruit that you use or the flavor of protein powders. Many of my clients turn their nose at the idea of spinach in a smoothie. Honestly you would never even know it is there, and what at great way to get a serving a vegetables at breakfast. Finally the Chia seed, it is all the range in healthy today, but honestly I pick out of convenience because they don’t need to be ground like my flaxseed use to!

The Power of Breakfast Smoothie


  • 1 Scoop Chocolate Whey Protein Powered (Whole Foods 365)photo 2
  • 1 cup Almond Milk, unsweetened
  • 1/2 small-medium sized banana
  • 1/4 cup frozen berries (raspberries/strawberries/blackberries)
  • 4 slices frozen peaches
  • 1/4 cup frozen pineapple/mango chunks
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 2 Tbsp Chia seeds
  • 2 ice cubes
  • Blender/Magic Bullet

Breakfast Smoothie picstitch (1)Step 1: Combine fruit, spinach, protein powder, ice and almond milk

Step 2: Blend until smooth

Step 3: Add 2 Tbps Chi seed. (You can blend the chia seed, but I found it sent them all to the bottom of the smoothie, so now I just stir them in.)

  1. Great post! I look forward to trying your breakfast smoothie recipe. My only suggestion (even before trying it though), is that you swap your whey protein for a veggie protein like Arbonne’s cranberry, pea, & brown rice protein blend. It’s a lot healthier for you! Otherwise, it sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks for the suggestion, funny you mentioned that I have been trying out Vega a pea protein this past week. I use whey because I have my shake right after an intense morning work out and our bodies tend to absorbs whey protein better. I like the idea of pea protein as a “greener” protein because it comes from plants.
