Quick & Healthy… Sweet Treat, Broiled Grapefruit!

So my new social media obsession lately has been PinterestPinterest is a virtual pinboard that lets you organize and share things you find on the web. It has been my new inspiration for cooking because it is so visual. I love that with a simple click I can add a recipe to my virtual recipe box! This has become my new recommendation for my clients who are looking for new ways to spice things up in the the kitchen.

Dietitian Drive Recipe board on Pinterest!

The other morning as I surfed the Food & Drink pinboard, a flash of pink and yellow deliciousness caught my eye, Broiled Grapefruit! I love grapefruits because they are so tart and tangy but have this underlying sweetness. On their own they are a treat, but the thought of broiling them intrigued me. I made them last night and O’boy were they amazing! While eating them it felt like I was having a gourmet dessert. Hard to believe that deliciousness came from 4 simple ingredients and took less than 10 minutes to prepare.

Dietitian Drive’s Version of Broiled Grapefruits!

Most of the broiled grapefruit recipes call for butter, I figured we could cut that out and still have a delicious treat, without the added fat.

Ingredients: 1 grapefruit, halved crosswise, 1/4 teaspoon sugar, 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, Dash pumpkin pie spice

Time: 10 Minutes

Step 1: Preheat broiler. Using a pairing knife, carefully loosen grapefruit segments along edge of rind. Then loosen segments from each other.

Step 2: Sprinkle cut sides of the grapefruits with sugar, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice.

Step 3: Broil for 3-5 minutes, until sugar starts to carmalize.

Step 4: Enjoy! My next step is to purchase a grapefruit spoon!

My Challenge for you this week is to find a place like Pinterest to inspire you to try a new recipes and cook more at home!

Just found your site through Foodie Blogroll and thought I’d stop by to check out your site. I subscribed to your blog feed and can’t wait to see what your next post will be!

    Hey Kerri,

I have a few sources I’d love to share. Some come to me via email sign-up (Tasting Table, a Williams-Sonoma affiliate, America’s Test Kitchen/Cooks Illustrated and Saveur Magazine); some I go to anyway (NTY [esp. Mark Bittman, Recipes for Health, Melissa Clark, David Tanis], Whole Foods); some of these even have videos which can often be helpful both in deciding whether a recipe is worth the effort as well as their for instructional value. After a while, you narrow your sources of inspiration to a few — hey, there’s only so much time available for cooking — whom you find trustworthy. Regardless, you have to test them yourself. I was inspired to try 4 new recipes this week: 2 were keepers; 1 was a flop; the last one was ok but I’d want to revise it if I make it again.

Question about Pinterest — are the recipes pictured in your post ones you have added?? Would the resolution allow me to retire my 3-ring recipe binders in favor of a tablet?? Can you up-load from your computer (e.g., a WORD document)?

    Best,

    – Howard
